Avoid the 21 Program

Home / Blog / Avoid the 21 Program

January 2, 2013 //  by Gregory Fox

Over the holiday season local law enforcement participated in the Avoid the 21 program. Representatives from all 21 participating agencies joined together to target drunk drivers. The program began on December 14, 2012 and ended at midnight on January 1, 2013. The Avoid the 21 program resulted in the arrests of 155 suspected drunk drivers throughout Fresno and Madera counties. In 2011, within a similar time frame, 147 drunk driving suspects were arrested.

The Avoid the 21 program is funded by a grant through the state Office of Traffic Safety. Throughout the popular Super Bowl weekend and St. Patrick’s Day similar projects will be funded with the same goal.

Avoid the 21 Program – DUI Crackdowns

At a New Year’s Eve DUI checkpoint the Fresno Police Department arrested five people on suspicion of DUI. The Fresno DUI checkpoint ran from 6 p.m. December 31, 2012 through 4 a.m. January 1, 2013. During the checkpoint the police impounded 15 vehicles for either being under the influence of drugs or alcohol or driving without a legal license.

The Avoid the 21 program is aimed at educating the public on the dangers of drunk driving as well as zero tolerance enforcement of driving while under the influence.
